Waag Society, 1993-1999

Together with Marleen Stikker, I founded the Society of Old and New Media in 1994 in the oldest secular building of Amsterdam, the Waag. Together with architect Jaap Dijkman and investor Peter Visser, we started a restaurant on the ground-floor as well. With partners from business (Rabobank and Weekbladpers), culture (Paradiso en the Balie) and education (Sandberg Institute and Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht/KMT) we were capable of financing a medialab that would work form out the agenda of the public domain. At the time in 1993/1994 Internet commercialized rapidly and both Marleen, working in the Balie at the time from where she started the Digital City, and myself working in Paradiso, found that it became harder and harder to organize and finance our work. When we started the Society for Old and New Media we had four research programs: sensing presence, editorial systems, creative learning and public space. In 1996 we won the Rotterdam Design Prize with The Readingtable for Old and New Media (design team: Rolf Pixley, Mieke Gerritzen, Janine Huizenga, Jaap Dijkman, Caroline Nevejan, Marleen Stikker).

Another project that was very dear to me was Demi Dubbel, a MOO environment that happened in 2 classes of 11 year olds from 2 different schools collaborating intensely for 5 days online. Over 80 schools participated. Today the Society for Old and New Media is called Waag Society and has grown into a place of significance for research development with digital technologies applied in the variety of sectors in the public domain.
